Tom arrived in the village when it was raining. He spent some time at the chairman’s home waiting on the rains to stop. While they were waiting, the chairman said due to the rains that came a day before had collapsed many latrines in the village. The chairman also suggested that most of those homes affected get to be visited. In the first four homes, they found an old latrine had collapsed. Tom and the committee members encouraged the resident to start on a new pit and not to wait as the family will get sick. In another home visited, the pit that was being dug collapsed and the resident was planning to dig a new pits. Tom greatly encouraged the resident to use better logs and to roof the latrine when it was done. In another home, the elderly man had finished putting the floor on the pit and was only remaining to roof the structure. Tom also encouraged residents about contributing money for the iron sheets to roof on there Latrines. Tom also in most of the homes that had collapsed latrines, Tom was emphasizing that the residents use bigger and stronger logs which don’t rot and collapse in during the wet season. There was a home that was severely affected by the rains that even the kitchen had collapsed but the man of the home had gone to get poles for a new kitchen. Tom also encouraged the woman to tell her husband to also try and fix the latrine before the rains fill the old pit up. In most homes where residents lost there latrines, there are new pits already that have been started on. Tom encouraged the committee members to continue following up on those families to make sure that they facilities are constructed well and fast.
