- Suzan, Jessica and Tape went to the village to monitor the stove usage and the maintenance of the other healthy and safe kitchen program facilities. When they reached there, they found the members gathered at the meeting place with some of their local leaders.
They warmly welcomed Kibo staff who then settled down together under a tree and briefly discussed about the progress of stove building and the smearing activity. Thereafter without wasting time since it was threatening to rain, they all got up and began moving around the village visiting home to home with the intention of monitoring the facilities.
According to the observations, some stoves were poorly maintained in away that they cracked all over due to luck of smearing and a few members complained saying the stoves were not cooking as they expected. Kibo staff explained to the members saying that the reason as to why they didn’t cook well, is leaving the air entrances piled up with ashes which needed to be taken out on daily basis after cooking.
Another thing was that some members built their stoves at the wrong wind direction which stopped fire from catching and also smoke from coming out the kitchens. The members were kindly requested to dismantle their old stoves and build new ones at the right wind positions so that they can cook well on their stoves and also see that they keep smearing them so as to avoid cracks.
Kibo staff also requested the members with poor facilities such as the dish racks, shower areas, latrines and kitchens to see that they improved on them by rebuilding and smearing.
Some members who had very strong and neat facilities promised to help their fellow members to rebuild them,saying they got destroyed during the heavy rains which are still going on.
Suzan thanked all the members for participating in the program activities,encouraging them to maintain the same spirit of working together for this would help them develop effectively within their community. The members were so grateful for the advice given by Kibo staff and the meeting came to an end wishing them a safe journey back home.
