Notes
Harriet made a surprise visit to Kitukiro village and this was intended to see whether participants cook on their stoves on daily basis and whether they have maintained or smeared their facilities. She reached in the village when no one was expecting her. She started walking home to home inspecting the participants stoves as well as smearing. She was led by Kaleka John one of the active member of the program. They sampled and walked through 15 homes whereby the they found three homes with three stone fire along side the fuel efficient stoves. These three women were wives of Gonza who is a community witch doctor and Kaleka told Harriet that he feared to ask those women since their husband is the most feared witch doctor in their village because they had roumors that the spirits stopped them from cooking on the stoves. Harriet decided to politely ask the households why they were using the three stones fire alongside the fuel efficient stoves. The women told her that their husband Gonza is a which doctor / traditional believer whose spirits stopped them to cook food on the stove that has cooked fish if they are to serve the small gods. This was challenging for Harriet to come out and decide against their beliefs because they would probably react at her instead she politely encouraged them to build one extra stove per kitchen to take care of their traditional beliefs. But with time this family will see light and stop believing in such superstitions. Also most people are busy smearing their facilities in preparation for Christmas and Harriet encouraged them to maintain even after Christmas. They also thanked kibo for empowering them with stoves that has helped them to cook food fast using less firewood during this rainy season where firewood is scarce.
