Notes
When Tom arrived in the village, he found three committee members waiting for him at the chairman’s home. After meeting with the committee members and discussing about the sanitation and hygiene situation in the village, they agreed to move around the village but to move on the upper section of the village. They started from one of the committee members home who is the head of the elderly people in the village. When they reached his home, they found he had constructed a new latrine and had even roofed it with an old iron sheet. He was very happy to show Tom and the committee members his new latrine. His wife was very thankful and thanked the committee members for encouraging her husband to construct a latrine for her. In another home, they found when they had started on a new pit because the old latrine had collapsed. In three other homes, they also found new pits being dug. Tom and the committee members were encouraging residents on digging better pits which can not easily cave in and also encouraged them to use better logs while constructing the latrines. In one home, they found when they had also finished a new latrine. They had not yet started using the latrine because it had no doors. Tom encouraged them to make the doors and put on the latrine so that they can start using it as the old latrine had collapsed. There were 6 home that had constructed the hand washing stands. Tom encouraged the committee members to always follow up and guide residents as they construct the hand washing stands because one of the hand washing stands they saw was not on standard and had already started breaking. They agreed to follow up and monitor the construction of the hand washing stands and also help maintain the standard.
