Notes
Tom passed by buluvu village to pick up vhts and together they drove off to Kisiro village where they also encouraged the committee there towards sanitation and hygiene. When they reached kisiro village, they were welcomed by committee members who brought chairs and gathered for the meeting. The meeting started off by sharing about the challenges residents/committee members are facing. Some highlighted about the fact that some pits are not going so deep more than 10ft because of the rock. Some also said some residents are facing the challenge of digging pits for the latrine because they have very small pieces of property on which they feel they don’t have enough space for the latrine. Also their was a challenge of digging pits in the sandy soils where residents said its risky and challenging to dig deeper pits in the sandy soils. In the meeting there was a resident who brought a solution to that. He said in the sandy soils, it’s better not to dig a rectangular pit but rather a circular pit. The circular pit holds well and it does not collapse. Tom also taught about using mud as a foundation on such a pit to hold it and give it more strength. The committee members were very thankful to that solution as there were many residents facing that challenge.Tom also shared with them about how to maintain a latrine with ash. Later they travelled to the borehole to check on the latrine being dug near the borehole. Tom wanted to clarify the right distance it should be for a latrine and a water source in this case the borehole. On reaching their, they found that the distance where the latrine was being dug to the borehole was right and Tom also encouraged them on how to maintain their borehole . Together they checked on 8 new pits being dug and encouraged the residents who are using the pick axes to do it fast so that other residents can use them as well before the rains start.
