Notes
Tom made a visit to Mpumiro village to encourage residents on facility constructions especially latrines, dish racks and shower facilities. When he reached the village, he was joined by the vice chairman of the village and together they moved to the lower section of the village to see what residents were doing in terms of improving on their sanitation and hygiene. Before they started moving, the vice chairman of the village thanked kibo for the great work it has done in his village. He pointed out one of his brothers as an example on which to offer thanks. His brother who is also his neighbor had never constructed a latrine in his life even though he has two wives. But because of Kibo’s continued efforts in encouraging him, he finally dug a pit and constructed a latrine. The vice chairman said he could not believe when his brother finally finished the latrine. As they moved, they found a resident whose latrine had collapsed but they found when he had already started on digging the new pit. Tom and the vice chairman advised him to increase on the depth of the pit before constructing on it. They also advised him on the shower facility to add a layer of brick and cement to give it more strength and support. In two homes on the lower section, they found two residents with new shower facilities and one resident had started on the construction of a kitchen for his home. He said the rainy season was very hard on his wife when it came to cooking and that he does not want this time rain to get on his wife as she cooks. He greatly thanked the vice chairman and kibo for encouraging him. On there way from the lower section to the chairman’s home, they found a home with a new latrine. His older latrine collapsed but the resident constructed the new one in one week. The vice chairman was very thankful and appreciated the resident for taking care of his home by constructing a new latrine after the old one collapsed. Tom also encouraged the vice chairman to continue moving around his village encouraging fellow residents to improve on their sanitation and hygiene levels.
