Notes
While Tom was in the village, he was joined by one committee member and the vice chairman later. They moved from the section of the vice chairman’s home toward the upper section., Tom and Mr Matia moved along the section of the main road towards the upper section of the village. From the section of Mr Matia’s home, there saw two new latrines being constructed. For one latrine in particular, the resident had not used good logs on the pit to support the structure. Mr Matia adviced the resident to reconstruct the latrine putting on better logs and constructing a better wall using bricks. The other latrine was at the structure level. Tom and Mr Matia thanked the resident for constructing a latrine for his home. Mr Matia also advised him to construct a hand washing stand in order to improve on hand washing in his home. The resident said he was to construct the hand washing stand once the Latrine was fully finished. Tom also encouraged the resident to roof his latrine once the structure is done. Along the road, there was also another home where they had started digging a new pit. Tom and Mr Matia advised the resident to dig a much beeper pit of about 20ft and more because of his big family. The resident said he wanted to dig a pit of about 30ft. As they moved along the road, they visited homes encouraging them on facility constructions and maintenance. They were also specifically encouraging residents on the construction of hand washing stands. Tom was encouraged to see more new hand washing stands being constructed and some stands already had jericans and residents were using the. From in one section of the village there had been a spill off to the neighboring village of Sembera were there are new latrines being constructed. Tom and Mr Matia visited one home when the woman in that home invited them to see what she was doing. Tom and Mr Matia thanked her and encouraged her to construct a better structure on the pit using better materials. They also encouraged her to construct a hand washing stand. There were three new latrines that they saw on that section of the village. In another section they found a new pit being dug on a new house under construction. The owner of the house said he wants to construct a Latrine for his house before he moves in with his family. He said ever since Kibo moved and taught the village about the value of sanitation and hygiene, he does not want to make the same mistake that he did before of entering a house that had no latrine. He also said he wants to make sure that his house has all the facilities before he moves in with his family. Tom and Matia thanked the resident for being proactive. Mr Matia promised to check on him and encourage him through and guide him through the standards and better methods of constructing a latrine.
