Notes
Alex and Chris Bulolo were in Butabira to follow up on new facilities under construction. Together with three sanitation committee members and the village LC 1 moved home to home in the upper part of the village. The main emphasis was on new pits being dug in the village. On a very good note 12 new pits were under construction of which 4 had been completed with one measuring 30ft. All the pick axes and shovels were being used and with many people still requesting for more help with new pick axes because of the high demand. The homes stretching to Buganza village have a very big challenge of a hard rock which makes it hard to dig a pit latrine and many homes on this side of the village and in Buganza village have no pit latrines and practice open defecation. Alex was able to observe two families in this section with no pit latrine at all and just defecate in the banana plantation behind the main house. Chris on the other side of the village met three homes with completely no pit latrines but were requesting for pick axes as they have tried to look for one but the demand is very high. Alex and Chris kept encouraging people to be patient and keep working on other facilities as they wait on the people using the pick axes and shovels. Many people have dug rubbish pits in their homes and they kept guiding them on the standard size required. It was also agreed that next trip will be focused on how to construct a new design of the dish rack as most many people are constructing sub standard dish racks. On a sad note towards the end of the day as Alex and Chris we’re preparing to head back to Jinja, they met a young boy who had collapsed on the road side and decided to offer help and rushed the boy to the health facility to get immediate treatment about 10km away from the village. The boy received treatment after being diogonised with severe malaria and yet the village people kept saying that the boy was possessed and were considering to take the boy to the shrine. Alex stayed in touch with the family and the boy was responding well. They were very happy for the quick help of transportation to the health facility and thanked kibo group for the sacrifice.
