When Tom reached the village, he found when the committee members were waiting in the trading center. Together they first met and shared about how to move. Several committee members encouraged that they make a quick visit to kisiro East before coming back to kisiro west for follow up. The suggestion was to visit a few homes that are very challenging in sanitation and hygiene improvements. They visited 9 homes in kisiro East where they found 6 pits being dug as well as 3 new dish racks already finished. Tom encouraged the residents in kisiro East to work hard in improving their hygiene and sanitation standards. Tom also was encouraging about latrine constructions because in this section of the village, there is sand and Tom was encouraging them to use the circular method of digging the pit. They later moved back to the trading center where they found other committee members and local leaders and they started moving around. In the first few homes visited, about 4 pits already being dug and two already finished latrines with only the roof remaining. They also visited three homes of very stubborn residents who have never dug and constructed a latrine. One of them Mr Geofrey has two wives and two families but they all don’t have latrine and there was severe open defecation. Tom was able to speak to one of the wives and she promised to talk to her husband to dig and construct a latrine. In the same area, two of Geoffrey’s neighbors also don’t have latrines and there is a lot of open defecation around their homes. But what is promising is that many of the residents in that area have started digging the pits for latrines. They later moved and found a pit of about 25ft recently finished. The owner of the pit was so happy and Tom encouraged him to continue working hard and finish it with a well constructed structure. When they crossed the road to the other side of the village, they found residents constructing a shower area while in another home, they were digging the pit for the latrine. Tom also thanked them and encouraged them to work and finish their facilities. After moving around, they reached the meeting place and there they shared about the area they will move into next while following up. The committee members chose to move to kisiro East during the next visit and after Tom left for jinja. 36 homes were visited and 18 pits were still being dug for latrine construction with about 3 latrines at the completion stage.
