Notes
Tom made a visit to kalalu village to check on facility construction and sanitation improvements. When he arrived in the village, he was joined by 6 committee members. Before moving around, they first had a discussion where they shared about the program so far and how they are sensitizing the community. Tom earlier had encouraged them that if they want change in their village, the change has to start with themselves first therefore becoming the agents of change. Four committee members said they had already finished the hand washing stands and one said because he was constructing a hand washing stand in his home, several village residents asked him of what he was constructing so he used that time as an opportunity to educate them on the values of having a hand washing stand. He said he has helped three people already construct the hand washing stands in their homes. One lady said her neighbor asked her about the dish rack when he saw her cutting poles for the dish rack. She said this was also an opportunity for her to teach her neighbor about the new design of dish rack and values of having a dish rack. Before leaving the meeting, Tom encouraged each committee member to start as it will encourage their neighbors to ask questions and also to do the same. When they started moving around, they moved on the upper section of the village where they saw 6 new pits being dug and two already under construction. In every home, Tom and the committee members encouraged the residents about hand washing through the construction of the hand washing stands, the construction of the new model dish racks and the use of good construction materials for their latrines. One of the committee members who is an elder man said he was going to help four families who are all his relatives to construct for them the hand washing stands. The committee members also took down an old shower made up of old clothes and sticks. They said it was shaming the village and the community as it was not on standard. Tom encouraged the committee members to maintain the commitment and energy in order to improve on the sanitation and hygiene of their village.
