Notes
When Tom reached the village, he found when the committee members and the vhts were waiting in the trading center. They met for a short time after which the committee members decided which section of the village to move in. They all decided that they move in the section of the trading center in on the west side of kisiro. They started off by visiting the houses behind the trading center where they found several pits for latrines being dug as well as some dish racks under construction. Tom encouraged the residents to construct better dish racks that will last them longer and those that will benefit them well by using bigger poles and nails while constructing the dish racks. They were about 5 dish racks that were being constructed in this section and one was already being finished that same day. In that section they also saw a latrine that was only remaining with the roof to be completed. They later moved towards the lower section were they found many new rubbish pits already done as well as dish racks under construction. They also found another latrine that was just newly constructed and the lady was very happy and proud of her husband for constructing for her a new latrine in her home. But while Tom and the committee members were still there, she raised a complaint of her two neighbors who don’t have latrines yet they still practice open defecation. Tom encouraged the committee members to talk to those neighbors because at that moment they were not in their homes otherwise Tom would have talked to them. Tom also talked to a landlord on phone and encouraged her to construct a latrine for her tenants on the house. The landlord agreed and said he was to send money for digging the pit as well as for buying bricks for construction of the latrine. Tom also visited several homes with already old latrines that are full and encouraged those residents to start on new ones. Tom was very proud of one old man who has worked hard by constructing a new pit latrine and soon it will be done. Tom also encouraged the committee members to continue monitoring the progress as well as encouraging those residents who are working to continue working and finish their work. One landlord with about 8 tenants all without latrine was advised by Tom to dig a 30ft pit and a two stall structure for her tenants as well as constructing one for her home. She accepted to do so but was furious and strongly warned the neighbors from using her latrine once it’s done. The committee members agreed that they willing also encourage the neighbors to dig and construct theirs.
