Notes
While in kalalu village, Tom moved around with 5 committee members checking on sanitation and hygiene improvements in the village through facility constructions and maintenance. They started off from the trading center and moved towards the lower section of the village. Tom and the committee members were encouraging residents on better construction methods and facility standards. Around the trading center area, they encouraged residents to improve on their latrines as well as other facilities. They also encouraged each home to have a hand washing stand and a jerican. In one one they found a resident who was constructing a dish rack but was below standard. Tom and the committee members encouraged him to use better poles and also ask one of the committee members to guide him on how to construct the new model dish rack. Three homes had pits being dug for the Latrine. Tom encouraged the residents to dig the pits well so to prevent collapsing. He also urged the residents to get good poles for the dish racks. In two homes, Tom discussed with the men on how to locate a good location for the rubbish pit for it to be used efficiently. He urged the residents that the further away the pit from the kitchen the less likely it will be used. The two men appreciated the discussion and promised to move the rubbish pits closer to the kitchen. They also found a resident digging a new pit for the Latrine. Tom advised the resident to dig well the pit and thanked him for acting to improve the sanitation and hygiene of his home. This is after residents reported that he had never had a latrine in his home as that his wife is the one that digs temporary pits for the children. On the upper section, he encouraged the residents to construct the hand washing stands and improve on their hand washing practices
