Notes
Tom went to kalalu village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements and facility constructions. He was joined by 4 committee members and they moved around the village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements. They first had a meeting to discuss the progress of the program in which the committee members said the program was going well but but with some challenges. One committee member said that Tom needs to visit that section of the village so that many of the residents also start to work. They also said that because the village is too big with many homes, they are having a challenge of pick axes because they are not enough and people have to wait to get a pick axe. Also there was a burial in the next village kiwani where the committee members were planning to go and attend. So Tom suggested that they move around the trading center in some homes before they break off. In the trading center, they saw four new hand washing stands. Tom encouraged the residents to put on a layer of cement to make them stronger. In one home, the resident had even put a jerican on the hand washing stand and Tom appreciated him for taking action to improve the sanitation of his home. In another home, the resident has improved on his latrine by putting on a new wall and roof as well as constructing a new shower facility. He had also dug a new rubbish pit. In another home of a teacher, he had just finishing constructing the slab in the pit of a new latrine. Tom thanked him and his wife for sacrificing to have a good latrine for the home. They also moved in the upper section where they encouraged one resident to construct a wall and roof his latrine as the rain water was destroying the floor and the walls while in another home, the resident was encouraged to improve on his latrine structure because it was short. After they moved to one of the committee members homes to see his new hand washing stand and after this home, Tom left for jinja and gave a ride to some of the committee members to the burial place.
