Notes
This visit was to meet with the water user committee and sanitation committee to review their roles and responsibilities. The water user committee shown signs of being active in that the borehole is still working and many of the people that were got fetching water with clean Jerrycans and the caretaker was met busy sending back those with dirty Jerrycans. This visit was a surprise and what was seen there was quite encouraging after more than 6months when WASH has not been there. Alex met with four of the water committee members and reviewed their roles and responsibilities together like everyone to understand their position roles and to remain active at all times. The treasurer told Alex that they had 200,000/= on their account and they consult the hand pump mechanic on monthly basis for borehole checks like bearings, greasing and the rubbers. The borehole soak pit was very full and was dangerous to the young kids that come to the borehole as well as being a breeding place for mosquitoes. The water user committee was told to immediately work on this and empty the soak pit. Also there were some tippy taps being seen in the village and one of the NGO in the district is promoting hand washing as an intervention to COVID-19. Alex showed them another kind of hand washing facility being promoted by Kibo’s WASH program and many admired it. The water user committee loved it so much that they promised to build these in their homes and at the borehole for the rest of the village people to learn from. Alex also visited two homes in the trading center that didn’t have where to go but a few months ago they worked and completed new pit latrines in their homes. The water committee was encouraged to continue locking the borehole at 7pm to make sure the people don’t fetch water late at night since most school young girls have got pregnant during this COVID lockdown and its believed that if the boreholes are not locked at night in the village then these young girls and boys use this as an advantage and do bad stuff. They were still told to encourage and remind people to maintain their hygiene and sanitation

The construction of tippy taps is on the rise being promoted by another NGO but Alex showed them another new option of building the stands and they liked this idea. The water committee said they would construct this kind at the borehole for people to see as well as in their homes.
