Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
Jeska and Tape went to Buyange to follow up with smearing of some home facilities ,firewood storage and some kitchens that were found leaking. They reached in the village un expectedly and started walking home to home. They begun with the chairperson of Healthy and Safe kitchen program and found when she had not yet smeared her kitchen though the stove was in use and had a well stocked firewood at the risen storage stands. Jeska and Tape challenged Farida for setting a bad example to the people she was leading. They asked her that how can she encourage others to smear their kitchens and stoves when hers are not smeared. Also another challenge was found at Farouk’s home who was also on the committee for the healthy and safe kitchen program but found three stones fire in his kitchen along side the fuel efficient stove and also his kitchen was leaking. They asked him why he had not maintained his kitchen and why they had three stones fire in the kitchen.Farouk told them that he had gone to Kampala where the lockdown found him, he had just come back to village and sick. He said that he has a plan to roof his kitchen when he gets well. His wive committed herself to cut grass that the husband will use to roof. Jeska and Tape asked them why they were cooking on the three stone fire yet they have a stove in the kitchen. They said that Farouk believes in the African religion that doesn’t allow him to eat fish yet his family loves eating fish . He added that his religious spirit refused him to eat food cooked on a stove that has ever cooked fish. They then encouraged them to build an extra stove where they will cook fish other than using the three stones fire that may lead to fire accidents. Farouk said that when he finishes to improve his kitchen he will talk to the rest of the group to join and help him to build an extra stove in the kitchen. Also some people had built firewood risen stands but used weak poles and Incase they were over stocked with firewood they might easily collapse or even hurt some of the family members. Kibo staff encouraged them to use strong poles to construct firewood storage stands together with the dish racks or they first apply the black oil before building so as to avoid termites from eating up the wood. The members thanked kibo staff for the visit and advise given to them and wished them a happy stay.
