Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
HARRIET went to Naibowa village to guide participants to form a committee that will coordinate the program.she also intended to guide participants to form policies that will govern the healthy and safe kitchen program this will help to promote sustainability of the program even when kibo is out of the village. She reached in the village and did not find any one at the meeting place. This forced her to walk home to home looking at the home facilities as well as mobilizing participants to come for the meeting. As she was mobilizing the village she realized that most people have maintained sanitation and hygiene standard because she found some people busy sweeping their homes and others were already swept. She also found that most people lacked firewood risen stands in their kitchens whereby they did not store firewood except one person who had firewood in the corner of her kitchen. Later on participants turned for the meeting and HARRIET asked them to chose leaders that will coordinate the healthy and safe kitchen program. She also told the participants to take leadership knowing that it is a voluntary work therefore they should not expect any pay.she also asked the participants also to be committed and corporatized to help the committee to effectively perform their duties. For example if they know that they are supposed to have a meeting they shouldn’t wait for the committee to come to their homes to remind them for the meeting instead they should just come to the meeting. She also told the community that the committee will also help kibo to communicate to the village through them also encouraged the committee to communicate to kibo on behalf of the community in case of any change of the village . For example Incase there is a funeral in the village and kibo had planned to visit them they should inform them in advance so that kibo staff can also adjust their programs for that day. The women were shy to take leadership and HARRIET asked the women to actively participate in the committee because this program benefits women more than men.She also reminded them that leadership comes from God. At the end of a long argument a committee of Seven people was elected where by three people on the committee where women. The vice chairperson, treasure and the mobilizer were women. it was already getting late and HARRIET asked the committee to organize a meeting or remind behind a form policies that will govern the program so that next time she comes to the village they will first review those policies. She also introduced smearing and told the participants that for some to qualify to get a stove must have a well roofed, smeared kitchen, shower area and the latrine that participants will use as they visit her home. She told them that smearing helps the facilities to look neat and last longer . The participants will the help of the committee promised to do so. Also the participants had so far cut two bags of grass which was a sign of commitment and getting them selves ready to get stoves. She encouraged them to continue cutting more grass and this will quicken the program activities.
