Notes
Alex was in this village to continue follow up on hygiene and sanitation facility construction. Together with the village chairman and the sanitation committee members, they moved home to home in the upper part of the village checking on all the sanitation facilities under construction and continue guiding on the standards of these facilities. There is some great improvement in many of the homes that were visited. Pande had been without a pit latrine in the village but completed one last week and currently working on his kitchen and bathroom. Peter is also working on his new pit and was encouraged to roof it and prevent it from the threatening rains that can damage the new wall structure. Also 17 new hand washing stands were under construction and pending smearing them. They continued to encourage all the people to keep up the standards and those that had done things below standards were advised to re do them. The pit latrine coverage has greatly improved in this section with only one home still struggling to get a pit latrine. The vice chairman of the village was assigned this section and together they moved in the homes of this part of the village to check the improvements made. The construction of the hand washing facilities has also picked up and the vice chairman was encouraged by Alex to raise up more and meet the remaining people physically and talk to them about having their homes meet the required sanitation and hygiene standards. This part of the village faces a big challenge of a hard rock while digging their pit latrines and most of the people can go only as deep as 12ft. Also at the same time this part of the village has a challenge of clean water as they have to walk close to 3Km to the borehole in the village. The people in this part of the village get water from the nearby swamp. He encouraged the village leader together with the vht to make sure they work together to help those homes still struggling to come up in this section. Butabira village is indeed spread out and with a big population so the only borehole they have in the village is over crowded and end up breaking down many times yet it needs urgent repair. This village has greatly improved more so on the side of the hand washing facility construction and construction of new pit latrines. Alex plans to go back and continue follow up on the lower part and the upper side of the village checking on the completed sanitation facilities and distribution of hand washing Jerrycans to the people that have finished to smear them. All the people that visit this village continue to be amazed by the sanitation improvements in the village and like the type of the hand washing stands being constructed.
