Notes
Tom made a visit to kishaike to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements through the construction of hand washing stands and dish rack construction. When he arrived in the village, he first held a meeting with the village leaders to discuss about the progress of sanitation and hygiene. During the meeting, the chairman said that he moved around the village with another committee member and also encouraged residents on sanitation and hygiene especially the construction of hand washing stands. One of the committee members said he was very happy for the new hand washing stands. He gave a testimony that he really liked it because it was very easy to manage and use. He said the fact that every day a person has to bring it outside and take in back to the house makes everyone realize and know whether the jerican has water or needs to be washed. He urged the rest of the committee members to encourage residents to construct the hand washing stands because they are good. After the meeting, they moved to the lower section and found a resident constructing a new hand washing stand. They also found a new pit being dug and guided the resident on how to construct the slab of the latrine. The resident was also encouraged to use good poles and roof the latrine when it was done. On the lower side, they saw six new hand washing stands and one which was being constructed. From kishaike Tom made a trip to Mpumiro to meet with the chairman to discuss about claims that some residents are making in the village that the hand washing stands are markers in their land or property that kibo will use to grab their land. The chairman also said he was shocked that people are moving around that false message and promised Tom that he will visit those homes or people thinking that so that he explains to them. He also spoke about the improvements of hand washing in his home ever since he constructed the hand washing stand. He said that now that every person sees the stand with the jerican, they just walk to it and wash hands. He also said that he has to refill the jerican about two times a day. He also said many residents are embracing the idea and that they are constructing the stands. Tom encouraged him to work and clarify to the village residents that kibo came to the village to work with them to bring unity and development to the village and never with intent to grab their land.
