Notes
Manuela and Lorna went to Ikumbya to teach about HIV/AIDS transmission. Despite the fact that there is a lot of information out there, people are still at risk of getting HIV everyday. The meeting started with a word of prayer and communications from the different leaders of the community. The chairman kibo group welcomed Kibo staff and thanked them for sensitizing them concerning many areas of their lives and asked the community members to not take these lessons lightly but use the lessons for their own benefit. After the chairman, Lorna and Manuela were invited to teach the community members. Lorna greeted the community members and thereafter went straight to the review of the previous lesson. We looked at the immune system and it’s composition where we saw that the immune system is composed of the red and white blood cells. Lorna asked the community members what was the role of each of the cells and Mary mentioned that the white blood cell is responsible for transferring oxygen in and out of our bodies. However she mixed up the role of the red and white blood cell but we were able to correct it. Ivan then volunteered to explain the Elephant and lion game which they were also able to do well which was really great to see. After the review of the previous lesson Lorna asked the community members to remind her what the homework was about and they mentioned HIV transmission. After this Manuela took on with the Lesson on HIV transmission. Manuela asked the community members what were some of 5e ways they know through which HIV is transmitted and they mentioned; through unprotected sex with an infected person, through sharing sharp instruments, through child delivery, through blood transfusion among others. Manuela mentioned that we were going to look at 2 things fluids in which HIV is transmitted and where it passes. She explained that for HIV to get into ones body , it needs a portal of entry that is to say a cut or a wound , an opening vagina or penis without which HIV is not transmitted. She went ahead and asked them to mention these 4 fluids they mentioned sweat, urine , sperm and blood and only blood was right. Manuela thanked them for trying and mentioned the other 3 fluids which were; vaginal fluids, semen and breast milk. She added that sperm does not transmit HIV that’s why we have HIV negative babies with positive mothers. She also took this opportunity to tell the mo5hers to always give birth in hospitals because if they don’t they may stand a risk of infecting their child. She mentioned nurses know how to deliver children born to HIV infected mothers. On breast milk she mentioned that usually when a mothers viral load is high they will be advised to stop suckling however when it’s low they can go as far as 6 months with additional medication. She also added other ways HIV is transmitted like through accidents , blood transfusion. One lady then asked she has a challenge where in most cases her child looses blood and they have to transfuse but what are the chances that they won’t give her infected blood and what if the child is dying and she has no option but to accept the blood. Manuela mentioned that all the blood is tested before transfused and that unfortunately sometimes the health centers want money before they can transfuse. This lady’s child must be having a kidney or UTI problem but she doesn’t know. We advised her to go to a bigger hospital for more checkup. Another question was does the child make their own blood in the mothers womb ? How come they don’t get HIV through their parents blood. Manuela mentioned it’s impossible and the sack the child is in is protected the only way for blood to get into the baby is through the mother getting an accident, fighting, doing a lot of heavy work which may cause blood to escape to the umbilical cord to the baby. Manuela also mentioned ways through which HIV is not transmitted like through hugs, handshakes, sharing plates, cups, clothes among others. Overall the lesson went well because there were also many questions asked. The next lesson will be on HIV Prevention. We also
