Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
Suzan and Jessica went to the village to practically teach the community members how to remove the banana stems from the old stoves. When they arrived there, they found the members already gathered at the meeting place with their leaders. The members welcomed Kibo staff with a song which praised the healthy and safe kitchen program and meant that it was so educative to them and had greatly improved on their healthy lives. Without wasting much time, Suzan discussed about the activity to be carried out that day and informed the members that for it to be more effective, the members had to be divided into two groups so that everyone would be able to watch critically and also try to participate in activity. Two groups were formed mixing up men and women, and each group which was led by Kibo staff went to two different homes where the stoves were previously built. Kibo staff requested the members to go into the kitchens and stand aside so as to watch critically at the whole process because this was one of the most important skills that each one needed to learn and master so as to build a perfect fuel efficient stove. Kibo staff picked up the shovels, knives and pangas which were already in place and began piercing, twisting and pulling out the stems which were a bit stuck in the stoves. Some members especially the young men offered to help in pulling out the stems but under the guidance of Kibo staff which was so impressive and meant that they were willing to learn every skill come what may. When the stems came out, Suzan and Jessica picked the knives and took out some remaining dirt which were stuck in the stove entries and then smeared all the stoves sealing off the cracks which had developed. The members kept on asking questions during the whole process because this enabled them to learn easily. Finally the banana stems were taken out from two stoves that day and Kibo staff thanked all the members for participating in the activity and requested them to always see that they maintained all their facilities as well as improving in their sanitation and hygiene around their homes for a healthy living. The meeting came to an end after they agreed on the date that the next meeting would take place.
