Notes
Tom conducted a triggering session in igerera A village. He focused on triggering in hand washing, the construction and demonstration of the different hand washing stations or stands. When he arrived in the village, he was welcomed by three village leaders who said they had mobilized the village so the were waiting for people to come. The day was cloudy and started drizzling a little. As the attendance finally increased, the chairman of the village suggested that the meeting be started even though it was drizzling. The chairman opened the meeting by welcoming everyone to the meeting. Tom started off the meeting by asking residents about their hands and who had clean hands by show of hands. The group later selected four residents whom they thought their hands were clean. By washing their hands without soup and later with soup demonstration showed that if hands are washed without soap, they will still be dirty and only soap was effective in cleaning hands. Tom also led the group through other activities of hand washing as well as discussing about the dangers of not washing hands. Residents listed diseases brought about by not washing hands and they realized that the solution was to wash hands with soap. Tom also demonstrated by using ash to clean hands were there is no soap. Mothers with children who were in the meeting said they learnt that if they don’t wash there hands with soap, they might bring diseases to their children. They were also meant to demonstrate the construction of the new model dish racks but it was not done because of time. Before it could start raining heavily, Tom left and encouraged the committee members to mobilize for another day for the dish rack demonstration.
